Nach dem 1. und 2. Staatsexamen für das Lehramt mit den Fächern Biologie und Sport war er zunächst mehrere Jahre als Lehrer in Berlin (West) tätig. Danach erfolgten Promotion und Habilitation im Fachgebiet „Didaktik der Biologie“ in Berlin. Seit 1.8.1980 Universitätsprofessor für Didaktik der Biologie an der Technischen Universität Berlin. In mehr als 150 Artikeln und Essays und über 20 Büchern wird sein breites Themenspektrum deutlich, das sich von der „Sexualität des Menschen“ bis zu "tropischen Blütenpflanzen“ erstreckt.

Seine jüngsten Bücher widmen sich dem Amazonas, den er seit vielen Jahren auf Forschungsreisen und Exkursionen besucht sowie den tropischen Blütenpflanzen, die er rund um den Globus in vielen Ländern, die sich am Äquator befinden, erforscht hat.

Für seinen persönlichen Einsatz in der Umweltbildung verlieh ihm die polnische Regierung in den Jahren 2000 und 2001 zwei Orden.

Beruf und Hobby bilden für ihn in seinem ganzen bisherigen Leben eine Einheit, so ist sein Einsatz für die Natur und die Umwelt des Menschen bemerkenswert. Die zunehmend gefährdeten Ökosysteme und die extreme Bedrohung unserer Welt durch die weiter voranschreitende Bevölkerungsexplosion thematisiert er in zahlreichen Vorträgen - oft auch vor einer breiten Öffentlichkeit in ganz Deutschland - , wenn er über ausgewählte Regionen aller sechs Kontinente von der Antarktis bis Grönland, von der Osterinsel bis Galapagos berichtet.

Da die Biologiedidaktik zu seinen Ausbildungsschwerpunkten zählt, kann er sein Fachwissen und seine umfangreichen Erfahrungen in spannenden Vorträgen vermitteln. Sein Credo lautet dabei stets: Alles hängt mit allem zusammen.

After the 1st and 2nd examinations for the teaching profession with the subjects biology and sport, he first worked for several years as a teacher in Berlin (West). He then completed his doctorate and habilitation in the field of "Didactics of Biology". Since 1.8.1980 he has been a university professor for the didactics of biology at the Technical University of Berlin. In more than 150 articles and essays and over 20 books, his broad spectrum of topics is evident, ranging from "human sexuality" to "tropical flowering plants".

His most recent books are dedicated to the Amazon, which he has visited for many years on research trips and excursions, and to tropical flowering plants, which he has researched around the globe in many countries located on the equator.

For his personal commitment to environmental education, the Polish government awarded him two medals in 2000 and 2001.

Profession and hobby have formed a unity for him throughout his life so far, so his commitment to nature and the human environment is remarkable. He addresses the increasingly endangered ecosystems and the extreme threat to our world posed by the continuing population explosion in numerous lectures - often to a wide audience throughout Germany - when he reports on selected regions of all six continents from Antarctica to Greenland, from Easter Island to Galapagos.

As biology didactics is one of his main areas of training, he is able to convey his expert knowledge and extensive experience in exciting lectures. His credo is always: Everything is connected to everything else.
