Thomas M Johnson MD

Thomas M. Johnson was born and raised in Winona, Minnesota. He graduated with honors from Haverford College and then attended medical school at the University of Minnesota on a Navy Health Professions Scholarship. After an internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, Thomas trained as a diving medical officer and completed a tour of duty supporting submarine operations in Holy Loch, Scotland, followed by a residency in neurology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda MD.

Thomas has served at numerous navy hospitals and medical centers, as well as part of the Navy Experimental Diving Unit, and was deployed to Southeast Asia as well as to Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was instrumental in establishing the Intrepid Spirit Concussion Recovery Center at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, and served as its director from 2015 until his retirement from the navy in 2019.

He’s still actively engaged in the care of service members who have sustained traumatic brain injuries at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune. He is also the author of Beowulf in Iraq: Lessons from an Ancient Warrior for the Modern Age.
