David Littschwager

David Liittschwager is a freelance photographer and a contributor to National Geographic and other magazines. His photographs are in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Honolulu Academy of Arts, American Museum of Natural History, and the National Academy of Sciences.

Between 1983 and 1986, he worked as an assistant to Richard Avedon in New York City. He continued to work in advertising for a number of years before turning his skills to portraiture with an emphasis on natural history subjects. Liittschwager is a recipient of a World Press Photo Award, an Oak Leaf Award from the Nature Conservancy, a Thomson Reuters/Zoological Record Award for Communicating Zoology, an Endangered Species Coalition Champion Award for Education and Outreach, and a Bay & Paul Foundation Biodiversity Leadership Award. In 2011 he received a commission from the David Brower Center to produce an exhibition, One Cubic Foot, for the third annual “Art of Advocacy” series. A larger exhibit of the One Cubic Foot work was shown at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History during 2016-2018. The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service has produced a version that is available from 2021 through 2024.
