Dr. Tia Buchanan

Dr. Tia D. Buchanan is an internationally credentialed Traumatologist and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor with more than sixteen years of specialized experience in complex trauma, emotional and psychological abuse, addictions treatment, crisis intervention, and integrative mind–body healing. Holding advanced credentials including LPC‑S, LPCC, LCMHC‑S, NCC, CCMHC, and Licensed Addictions Counselor, she brings a rare depth of clinical expertise to her work with survivors across the lifespan.

Her career spans the United States and Japan, where she served as the only Army ASACS clinician in the region, providing trauma‑responsive care to military‑connected youth and families. Dr. Buchanan’s clinical practice includes extensive work with complex PTSD, dissociation, attachment trauma, emotional dysregulation, coercive control, narcissistic abuse, and addiction‑related trauma, making her a trusted specialist in high‑acuity and high‑complexity cases.

As the founder of Acorns n Bones OMC and the creator of Nature‑Raised EMDR™, she has developed innovative, nature‑integrated trauma modalities that blend somatic awareness, bilateral stimulation, ecological grounding, and narrative reconstruction. Her work bridges neuroscience, expressive arts, and trauma‑informed psychoeducation.

Dr. Buchanan is also a published author and illustrator, known for transforming complex neurobiological concepts into accessible, emotionally resonant stories. Her creative works—including Miss Amy G. Dala, Mr. Hippo Campus, the My Heart My Broken Heart series, and multiple trauma‑informed journals—use symbolic storytelling and mixed‑media adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 illustrations to illuminate the lived experience of trauma.

Across her 16+ year career, Dr. Buchanan has:
