Niels Hammer

I was born in Denmark, and have lived in England, Sweden, the Middle, the Far East, India and America, sailed the seas, struggled on the barricades, transformed five acres of barren farmland to a biological diversity refuge with 190 species of plants, 58 species of birds, 11 species of mammals and 29 species of butterflies.

I have written articles in such journals as Asian Philosophy, Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft, Journal of Indo-European Studies, Mind and Matter, Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society about consciousness research, Indo-European linguistics, and comparative aesthetics, a monograph The Art of Sanskrit Poetry (2003), about alankara, dhvani and rasa, the poetics of the Dhvanyaloka of Anandavardhana and Abhinavagupta; two novels, It Takes a Thief (2018), about a painter who falls in love with a conscientious female burglar, and the hardships of surviving with integrity as an artist in a plutocratic and ochlocratic society; and another, Spells of Dusk and Dawn (2021), about the devastating conflict between having an intense loving relationship and the need for solitude to enhance self-awareness; poetry in such magazines, as Orbit, Dream Catcher, Autumn Moon Haiku, Littoral Magazine, and a collection of poems, Stages (2025) about the wonder of feeling, seeing and hearing that which is; Nature, the quest for authenticity/self-awareness, the evanescence of this sojourn, the attempts to find the most appropriate word and the extinction of life on the planet.
