David Miller

David Miller’s business life started in retail banking but it was at a manufacturing company, as a young management trainee when he taught himself to use Fortran to write a program to plan the production of 5 factories, where his career in information technology was launched. He has since worked in many business sectors in the UK and internationally as a manager or management consultant. Over a period of more than 50 years his professional career has embraced most aspects of IT from development and operations to strategy and architecture and he has held CTO, CIO, CMO and CEO roles. Throughout his career in technology, he has remained focused on what could be achieved in business terms and on business transformation. As well as various articles for academic and professional journals, he has authored two books on ‘Business-Focused IT’ (Miller, 2005) (Miller, 2008), and in 2013 was awarded a PhD for research into the management and governance of business technology. Other interests include motor sport and fencing. As a fencer and member of the Great Britain team he has a gold medal from the 2016 European Veterans Team Championships.
