Nicolas Berggruen is a recognized philanthropist, thought leader, and author of books: Intelligent Governance for the 21st Century: A Middle Way Between West and East and Renovating Democracy: Governing in the Age of Globalization and Digital Capitalism. Born in Paris, France, Nicolas studied at l’Ecole Alsacienne before attending Le Rosey in Switzerland and earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance and International Business from New York University in 1981.
Three years later, he founded Berggruen Holdings, an investment vehicle for the Nicolas Berggruen Charitable Trust, where he currently serves as an investment advisor. In 2010, Nicolas founded the Berggruen Institute to address fundamental political and cultural questions in our rapidly changing world. The non-profit, non-partisan think tank works with thinkers across cultures to explore Great Transformations in the human condition, restructuring of global economics and politics, and advances in science and technology. Through the Institute, Berggruen has launched several government reform projects, including the 21st Century Council, the Council for the Future of Europe, and the Think Long Committee for California. Additionally, he launched Noema Magazine as a digital and print publication dedicated to exploring global issues.
Mr. Berggruen sits on the boards of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum Berggruen in Berlin and is a member of the International Councils for the Tate Museum, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the President’s International Council for The J. Paul Getty Trust, Los Angeles.
