Avijit Gangopadhyay

Avijit Gangopadhyay, PhD, is a Professor at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where he teaches ocean circulation and modeling, ocean-atmosphere dynamics and introduction to climate.

He is known internationally as he has held multiple visiting, distinguished, and honorary professorships at Harvard, the Institute of Oceanography of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur, and IIT Bhubaneswar. His research interests and contributions include the dynamics of western boundary currents, operational ocean modeling and data assimilation, basin-scale climate-related processes, and multi-scale multidisciplinary data-model synthesis studies.

Professor Gangopadhyay earned his PhD from the University of Rhode Island and was at Harvard University and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory before joining UMass Dartmouth. He is a Fulbright Scholar and has long-standing collaborations with MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He resides on the shores of the Atlantic in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
