Terry J. Wiest

Terry J. Wiest has over 48 years of experience fishing the Pacific Coast for salmon, steelhead, halibut, lingcod, tuna, seabass and more. A natural speaker, author and angler, Terry has the ability to put more fish in your boat as well.

Starting out with his Dad, and best fishing partner ever, it was soon discovered Terry had a knack for fishing. They enjoyed each other’s company and were always one of the top boats at day’s end. Derbies were always fun and they placed very well in most salmon derbies, even winning a couple smaller ones along the way. After Terry’s dad passed away in 2001, Terry became even more obsessed with fishing as a way to honor his father. He’s since won three derbies after his father’s passing and continues to be a well-known figure on the Pacific Coast.

Terry has published over 150 magazine articles, mostly on salmon and steelhead, but also on his many adventures around the Pacific Northwest, Canada and Alaska doing what he loves to do…fishing!

At the urging of his wife Theresa, Terry wrote his first book Steelhead University: Your Guide to Salmon and Steelhead Success which is a best seller and won top honors from his peers, being voted “Book of the Year 2012” for the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association. Terry’s second book, Float Fishing for Salmon & Steelhead is also a best seller and was nominated for “Book of the Year 2014”. Saltwater Fishing the Pacific Coast is Terry's latest book which is proving to be a must have for all west coast saltwater fisherman achieving impeccable endorsements from all the top west coast anglers and authors.

Terry is Owner of Steelhead University, which was at one point the largest salmon and steelhead fishing website on the West Coast. A great resource, Steelhead University is intended to expand the viewer’s knowledge and tools to help them fish more efficiently and ultimately hook more fish.

Terry was welcomed into the Oak Bay Marine Group Captain’s Club in 2008 and since has repeated this feat for both salmon and halibut. This is an exclusive club for anglers who have landed exceptionally large salmon and/or halibut.

Terry is an active member of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association and is Past-President of the South King County Puget Sound Anglers where he is a Lifetime Member. He was also Derby Chairman for the most successful Salmon Derby in the Puget Sound area for 10 years straight. Terry is also a Pro-Staff member for many fishing-related companies and is an Ambassador for G. Loomis, Shimano, Silver Horde and Pautzke.

Catching hundreds of salmon, along with numerous steelhead, halibut, lingcod and other species each year, Terry’s passion comes through in his writing. The ultimate compliment is when Terry receives a “Thank You” for sharing his knowledge and getting others on fish.
