Sharin N. Elkholy

Sharin N. Elkholy, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Houston— Downtown, and a certified Philosophical counselor with a focus on philosophy as a way of life. She received a BA in psychology from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and her Ph.D. in philosophy from The New School for Social Research in New York City. Working with students over the years, Sharin has developed a unique method of introducing key philosophical ideas as tools to address everyday matters and concerns. She found that when her students related personally to ideas, they were more able to appreciate the insights and wisdom that philosophy had to offer them in their daily lives. In Philosophy Wise: Timeless Ideas for a Meaningful Life, and in the accompanying Philosopher’s Deck, Sharin has distilled this practice of teaching philosophy into a tool book of classic ideas for everyday living. She is also the author of Heidegger and a Metaphysics of Feeling: Angst and the Finitude of Being, editor of The Philosophy of the Beats, and has written numerous articles on love, gender, race, and well-being.
