John L. Gray M.Ed

Professionally, John Gray had a 40 year long career in policing. His career started with the National Park Service. He was a Deputy Sheriff in a small rural country in Oregon and transferred to a large Sheriff's Office in Western Washington where he would later work as a detective investigating Crimes Against Children, led a Hostage Negotiation Team, and supervised patrol deputies. For the next 12 years, he served as a Police Chief in two cities in Western Washington. He taught college level courses and was frequent instructor teaching police management courses. He was active in accrediting police agencies. He worked for 8 years as a full-time consultant creating and administrating promotional testing processes for police agencies. He and Laurie Gray did over 200 processes with over 800 candidates for the positions of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and commander. He has done seminars for police candidates seeking a promotion that is based on the book, Be The Police Supervisor.

He has a Masters of Education graduate degree with a focus on leadership and training. He has published articles in several law enforcement magazines.

As a boater, John has 35 years of experience that started with racing sailboats in San Diego. They sailed throughout Puget Sound for 10 years. They have had powerboats for 25 years ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet long. They lived aboard for 5 years. They have owned three Ranger Tugs. They have completed the Great Loop nearly two times and have done the Inside Passage from Seattle to Glacier Bay National Park. John is a licensed Master for 50 ton vessels. He and Laurie have presented at boat shows and rendezvous. John does on-the-water training for boaters who want to be more confident on the water.
