Antony T. Smith

Antony T. Smith is an associate professor of literacy education at the University of Washington Bothell. He has co-authored the following books:

Why We Drop Out: Understanding and Disrupting Student Pathways to Leaving School, written with Deborah Feldman and Barbara Waxman, shares the voices of young people who have dropped out of school, illustrating the factors that propel young people down the pathway to dropping out.

Mathematizing Children’s Literature: Sparking Connections, Joy, and Wonder through Read-Alouds and Discussion, written with Allison Hintz, focuses on the ways mathematics is represented in children’s literature and outlines several different types of read-aloud experiences.

A Cyclical Model of Literacy Learning: Expanding the Gradual Release of Responsibility, written with Adrienne Minnery, introduces an expanded learning model for early literacy, based on the widely-used gradual release of responsibility model.

A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Antony also loves to cook, travel, and read novels.
