James Hywel

James began his writing journey in 2001, with many of his early titles going on to reach fifth and sixth editions. In August 2021, inspired by his niece and nephew in Scotland, he wrote The Musings of the Milliner, little knowing it would spark The Magical Misadventures of Mr Milliner series, which has since grown to seven beloved books. His next series, The Adventures of Albert Mouse, introduced the world to Dartmouth's most fa-mouse resident, and quickly found a cherished place in the hearts of young readers everywhere.

To explain where James's stories come from would be quite impossible, and even he cannot fully account for it. His writing process is as unorthodox and quirky as his books are magical and mind-transporting.

After five wonderful years and 31 books, James has made the deeply personal decision to step away from writing children's books. It is not a decision taken lightly, but one that has come after much reflection, rooted in personal circumstances that have brought this particular chapter to a close.

What he carries with him is pure gratitude: gratitude for every child who lost themselves in one of his stories, for every parent and teacher who shared his books, and for every kind word of encouragement along the way. The joy these books have brought to others has meant the world to him, and he hopes that joy lives on in the pages long after he has stepped back.

All 31 books remain available, so the stories are not going anywhere. James is also pleased to share that royalties from several titles will continue to be donated to causes close to his heart, including Great Ormond Street Hospital and When You Wish Upon a Star, a charity that brings joy and magic to children facing serious illness. It has been a privilege to give something back through the books, and that giving will continue.
