History has always been my thing! For as long as I can remember I have had a strong interest in those that had come before us, in particular the people who make the history of Mildenhall Town and the County of Suffolk

I have a large collection of artefacts, antiques, photos and documentation relating to Mildenhall that I have collected over the years. In 2020 I combined my passion for genealogy with that of my interest in my home town and began to research the lives of the poorest inhabitants of Mildenhall's past, those that passed through the door of the Mildenhall Union Workhouse.

Local History particularly that of the Workhouse has taken over much of my leisure time. Working full time in engineering means, writing a book has consumed much of my downtime. So as not to distract too much from my family time, I have researched and written most of this book between the hours of 4am and 10am on the weekends, holidays and on occasions before work. It has not always been easy when that early alarm goes off and I have to drag myself out of bed, but looking back every early hour has been worthwhile.

I have not always been so driven when it came to documenting my research , I can remember being an excited 18 year old starting A Level History, only to quit after one week due to my shock of being asked to write a 2000 word assignment! On a good day I can now write 2000 words before my children wake up.

Researching my book has enabled me to travel through time and visit the Victorian streets of the Town I love, I can honestly see and hear the sounds of Victorian Suffolk as I walk around the town today, visiting the locations in my book. I truly know those residents who walked the same streets as me 150 years earlier.
