Kip asks his readers to think critically about the influence of bureaucracy on science teaching and encourages teachers to teach science in the spirt of playful exploration and aesthetic appreciation. The essays in Kip's "Do Elephants have Knees?" introduces serious Darwinian ideas with whimsical children’s literature. In addition to science writing, Kip has focused his retirement on learning to roll his kayak reliably. For twenty-five years, he coordinated the Science M.A.T. Program at the Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. His courses served K-12 educators and featured field study in geology and natural history. Kip studied science education and paleontology as a graduate student at Cornell University, leading to an interest in teaching about geologic time. Before responding to the call of academia, he enjoyed the privilege of teaching elementary and middle school children in Connecticut and Colorado.
