Brad Capener is a professional educator, and former history teacher and author, who looks critically at how U.S. history is taught in our high schools. His book is designed provoke a conversation about engaging, honoring, and equipping young people to know and carry on the American story. Furthermore, our young people need to know who they are as individuals and as Americans. They need to see themselves in our broader American story and feel a sense of identity and pride. They need to grapple with our intolerant past, and learn to grow and heal so that we can bridge the racial divide in this country. They need to understand the challenges facing them and connect those challenges to history in order to gain perspective, and move forward as citizens in our Democracy.
