A native of Alabama, Wm. Jay Suggs, MD, FACS, FASMBS, FFSMB, returned home after his general surgery training at the Mayo Clinic and bariatric surgery fellowship in Princeton, New Jersey, to start his first bariatric surgery Center of Excellence. Dr. Suggs is a board-certified surgeon and is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He has degrees in biology and chemistry from Emory University and earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Suggs and his wife and three daughters live in Decatur, Alabama, where they are an active part of their community.
Writing, lecturing, and teaching have always been passions of Dr. Suggs. He is an associate professor of surgery and director of medical education at his regional medical center. He has been involved in the leadership of multiple professional organizations and hospitals, including serving on his state’s medical board and the state board of health.
Dr. Suggs is the president of Alabama Bariatrics and has performed more than three thousand bariatric operations, including the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the laparoscopic gastric bypass, the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, intragastric balloons, and bariatric revision/redo surgery.
