Bob Marmion has had a lifelong interest in Australian military and police history, particularly the colonial era of the 19th century through to 1945. He was a member of the Victoria Police for fifteen years serving in both uniform and the Criminal Investigation Branch as a detective. Over the years, he was involved in the investigation of many serious crimes including murders and manslaughter, armed robbery, fraud, arson and sexual offences.
When he left the police force, Bob studied at university as a mature age student before eventually completing a PhD in Victorian military history, titled “Defending Victoria”. In recent years he was co-ordinating the Victorian Defences Project 1803-1945 which was a multi-disciplinary team of historians, archaeologists, engineers, mapping experts and the members of the public as they recorded Victoria’s military history. One of the group’s major projects has been the recording of over 250 defence sites around Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.
Bob is an accredited member of the Professional Historians Association of Victoria (PHA Vic) since 2008. He has over thirty five years of experience as a historian. He is the principal historian at History Solutions.
