Andrew B. Kipnis

I am an anthropologist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before that I worked at the Australian National University. I have written six books about China and have edited and contributed to many others. I am particularly interested in social and cultural change in China as it relates to urbanization, authoritarian governing, and daily life. Topically I have focused on the rise of the funerary industry in urban China, education and education reform, changing patterns of family and kinship, economic development, processes of governing and regulating everyday life, religion, and ideas about ghosts.

I have lived in China for over 10 years and conducted research in Shandong province as well as the cities of Nanjing and Hong Kong. I first went to the China in 1987. I have also visited every province in China at least once.
