My dad had a ranch in King's Ferry, Florida on the St. Mary's River about twenty miles as the crow flies from the Okefenokee Swamp. The origins of this story are from Boy Scout camping trips where tales were told around a campfire about Boutone and water men. I don't know where the camp counselors got their versions (each telling seemed to have a different unfolding), but within the dark shadows of the cypress trees just beyond the flickering campfire, it was easy to imagine Boutone hunting--but hunting for what.
