Charles Scawthorn

Charles Scawthorn is a practicing structural engineer and recognized authority in the analysis and mitigation of natural and technological hazards and risk.

From 2003-2008 he was Professor of Infrastructure Risk Management in the Department of Urban Management, Kyoto University (Japan) and more recently has held Visiting Professorships at Waseda University (Tokyo), Beijing Normal University and Stanford University (USA). He is currently Visiting Researcher at the University of California at Berkeley. In more than 30 years of experience Dr. Scawthorn has developed integrated risk mitigation programs for natural and technological hazards and climate change for facilities, systems, organizations, communities and sovereigns and in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Mid-east, Asia and Oceania. This work has been based on his investigations of natural disasters in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, China, Turkey, the former Soviet Union, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Pakistan.
