John D'Eathe

John D'Eathe (LLB Hons. FRICS, CRE, RI, (Rtd.)) ]

John spent ten years as a young businessman in Colonial Hong Kong, an experience which was to shape his life.

Traveling throughout Asia and Africa and working in Hong Kong in the waning years of the British Empire, he experienced the end of an era. Then he moved to Canada and took part in the social transition which produced the integrated society of which we are proud today.

He got his first career break in England when as an appraiser he won the national Institution Prize of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This led to him being noticed by an old establishment Asia Trading company which inviting him to take the big step to leave England and join their property group in Hong Kong.

He started his law degree in Hong Kong and completed it with honors when he moved to Canada. He was a long-time member of the BC Bar Association but made his career in real estate, being involved in every form of real estate financing, investment and development in Canada, the United States and around the world for over fifty years. He experienced firsthand how the various cultures get things done.

He was active in the leading real estate professional associations and organizations in North America. The Real Estate Institute of British Columbia recognized his long services to that industry in Canada through their prestigious Award of Excellence in 2011.

He has essentially been concerned in his own business interests and investments, but he is particularly proud of a thirty-year association with one of largest property groups in Canada and North America where he rose to the position of group chairman, and he remains active in real estate business.

His community work in Hong Kong motivated him for a lifetime of civic involvement in Canada involving multiple non-profit and charitable service organizations over the years. For this activity he was awarded the BC Community Achievement Award in 2013 and The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2017.

John lives in West Vancouver with his wife Lane, a McGill graduate from Montreal, and tries to keep up with his four successful children and ten grandchildren.
