Wayne Ward

Wayne Ward was born in Melbourne in 1938 and went to sea as a deck boy at sixteen. On his second ship, a Newcastle AB took pity on a lonely deck boy with the ship alongside for the weekend and took him home to meet his sister. He never left, still with the same partner sixty-four years on. Retirement from the maritime industry came in 2000, forty-four years at sea. An imaginative writer from an early age, author of nine novels, forty short stories, and a seamanship and training manual. Eclipsing their able seaman father, three sons followed their father to sea and became foreign-going masters. Wayne and Heather have lived in Carrington, Wangi Wangi, Newcastle, USA, Canada, UK. He continues to write, the imagination not dulled by advancing years. He classifies himself as a working-class writer, his heroes eccentrics, rebels, insane, anti-establishment warriors; he does so because his roots are firmly planted in working-class dogma and a lifelong loyalty to a union that nurtured him in an industry filled with greed, chicanery and political patronage to exploit those who sail the oceans of the world..
