Carmen Bardeguez-Brown is a poet and educator from Puerto Rico. She became a member of the Spoken Word/Poetry scene that took place in the early 1990s at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe under the mentorship of Bob Holman, Louis Griffith, Miguel Algarin, and Keith Roach. She was also a member of Steve Cannon and Bob Holman "Stoop" Writing workshop.
Carmen Bardeguez-Brown is the author of For the Love of Cooking: Chef Tao, a Memoir (2022). Her published poetry collections include: Meditation on Love Dance and Loss (2022); Three Poets/Tres Poetas, a collaboration with Marlena Maduro Baraf and Julio César Paz (2022); Lo que aprendí al otro lado del mundo, a collaboration with author Julio César Paz (2020); Dreaming Rhythms: Despertando el Sueño (2016); and Straight from the Drums (2012). Anthologies that include her work are: Musings During a Time of Pandemic: A World Anthology of Poems on COVID-19, ed. by Christopher Okemwa (2020); ¡Manteca! An Anthology of Afro-Latin@ Poets, ed. by Melissa Castillo-Garstow (Arte Publico Press, 2017); and Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe edited by Miguel Algarin and Bob Holman (1994).
Bardeguez-Brown's work has been featured in the documentary, Latino Poets in the United States, an award-winning documentary filmed and produced by Ray Santiesteban that showcases her among other founding members of the Nuyorican Poets movement such as Pedro Pietri and Willie Perdomo. Some of her work has been performed by Felipe Luciano’s Poets’s Choir, Butch Morris Conduction series #27 was performed at The Whitney Museum of Art. Her work was adapted and performed at the Art in Progress Cantieri Del Contemporaneo at Cosenza Italy; the performance interpretation can be seen on YouTube. In 2015 she was selected to be showcased in the traveling exhibit Homenaje curated by Ricardo Muniz. The exhibit featured 50 Puerto Ricans that have contributed to Puerto Rican culture and heritage in New York City. The art exhibit was acquired by the CUNY Centro/Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College. In 2020, she was awarded the Latina 50 Plus Literature Lifetime Award for her contributions to Latino literature in NewYork.
