Mike Biggs
MIKE BIGGS hit a major life crossroads in 2003-04 that led to a longer than expected sabbatical from his dream career in sports business. It was one involving writing and walking in faith after working alongside PGA Tour players, managers and events for 13 years. Suddenly and dramatically, he found himself discovering the heart of his older, physically-challenged sister Kathy. A heart he never really understood within a sister whose disability he felt burdened to make up for with his own life and achievements.
His “professional” career started in 1990 at the PGA of America following graduation from Oklahoma State University. As a junior and senior at Tulsa (OK) Edison High School, he had worked for the Oklahoma Outlaws of the now-defunct United States Football League (USFL). After two-plus years of media relations management at events such as the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches and 1991 PGA Championship, Mike joined the communications staff of Golden Bear International (GBI) in 1992. GBI (now the Nicklaus Companies) functioned as the career management and business entity of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, where Mike served in a variety of media and PR capacities.
In 1996, Mike moved from South Florida to Dallas and joined Cornerstone Sports which managed the likes of PGA Tour golfers Phil Mickelson, Bob Tway, Larry Nelson, Corey Pavin and Mark Brooks. Following corporate changes in and around the company in 1999, Mike left a year later to establish his own independent firm, Sports Communications Group (SCG). He signed former British Open Champion Justin Leonard as his first client. Soon to follow were contracts with Hambric Sports Management and Links Sports. He also worked with groups associated with various players from the NHL’s Dallas Stars, including Hall of Famer Mike Modano among others.
Leaving his full-time sports business focus to write a story planted on his heart, Mike began a journey featuring several years of uncertainty and numerous short-term projects. These projects remained in the sports and entertainment fields under the banner of a new self-owned consultancy, Wasteland Creative. All of this while sacrificing financially and battling internally in his own mind wondering what he was giving up and what he was writing for as the manuscript of Cottage 12 went through many forms. Life dealt a variety of huge personal challenges along the way, but God remained faithful and present among those challenges never letting Mike forget the heart and childlike faith of his sister.
In 2007, he found himself very unexpectedly serving part-time as Operations Director of Life in Deep Ellum (LIFE). While thinking it was only for a brief period, it lasted three years while featuring both spiritual and personal highs and lows. LIFE is a cultural center built for the artistic, social, economic and spiritual benefit of Deep Ellum (a music and culture hub of Dallas) and its residents, supporters and visitors. That is where Cottage 12 ended in 2009, but the continuation of the story rolled on in the background.
At the midway point of 2025, Mike is now in his 14th year at Jani-King International, Inc. (JKI) where he currently serves as Senior VP of Sports Partnerships & Global Development. JKI has served as a restoration of his successful sports business career before “LIFE” happened and God had a detour in mind. He stopped writing after Cottage 12 was completed, but released an update with a new Epilogue in 2021.
“Biggsy,” as he is known by old and new friends alike, was born in Northwest Arkansas; grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, lived six-plus years in Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter, Florida; before moving to Texas in 1996. He resides in Dallas with his wife, Tiffany; a crazy (but insanely cute) little dog Pita; and a sweet big dog Penny. His son Chase is pursuing business efforts in entrepreneurship while maintaining a strong interest in music production and engineering. His stepdaughter, Ellie, has started her college journey in Pennsylvania with a focus on International Studies.
