I started golf in Montreal in Canada when I was a teenager and played occasionally until I went away to college. It wasnt until I moved to Wales to be with my fiance that I took up golf once again.

I think I have an enquiring mind and soon found that there was lots to learn not just about how to swing the clubs. For example, the etiquette of who plays when, when it is ok to chat and when it isnt, how to mark a scorecard - even how to read a scorecard! Then there were which Rules of Golf were crucial to know off by heart as there were so many I knew I wouldnt be able to pay attention to all of them!

I started to read golf books on all sorts of aspects including golf psychology but none seemed to include information that I eventually only learned after years of playing. I had to learn everything from scratch and that included some embarrassing moments.

One of my goals was to avoid the bad habits that I witnessed in others and instead be the sort of golfer that others would want to play golf with.

At the end of the 1990s I started to write down my experiences of people and events and eventually I realised that this was a guide for beginners to golf which seemed to dovetail with the LadiesNewtoGolf programme. I published this book during the UK lockdown period in February 2021.

I have been a very keen golfer and my lowest handicap was 8.0 and now I have a WHS handicap index of 11.8 I have always taken golf lessons and practised. I took an interest in the Rules of Golf over the years and went up to St Andrews in 2000 to gain the R&A official referee qualification for the first time. I have refereed in club and Wales Golf events over the years and kept up-to-date with the Rules most recently passing the Rules School Level 2 in 2018. I have been very active on the various golf committees in the clubs that I joined including the positions of Ladies Honorary Secretary, Ladies Competition Secretary, Ladies Handicap Secretary, Ladies County Secretary; Rating Assessor for Golf Union of Wales, and Chairman of the Club Competition and Handicap Committee.

I love every aspect of golf and love to encourage as many women as possible to play the game.

Please feel free to get in contact with your thoughts on golf in general, women in golf in general and in your club/county and any comments you would like to share about “Women New to Golf”.

Happy Golfing,

Mallory
