Alex W. Tong, PhD grew up in the city-state of Hong Kong, immersed in its rich heritage of Chinese and European cultures. He started formal karate training while an undergraduate at the University of Oregon. After he moved to Texas to lead a highly productive cancer research program, he founded the Japan Traditional Karate Association of Dallas as a young, third-degree black belt. JTKA Dallas celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2022. Tong has practiced Nishiyama Shotokan Karate for over fifty years, and holds the rank of hachidan (eighth-degree black belt) by the World Traditional Karate-dō Federation based in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the current President of the American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF), the oldest non-governmental organization for karate competitions in the United States. As a professional cancer immunologist, he has held adjunct professorships at Baylor University, Waco, TX, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. He and his family reside in Dallas, TX.
