Leymah R. Gbowee

Leymah Roberta Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist, social worker, and women's rights advocate born on February 1, 1972, in Monrovia, Liberia. She gained international recognition for her pivotal role in the peace-building efforts during Liberia's devastating civil war. Gbowee co-founded the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement, which brought together Christian and Muslim women to advocate for peace and and an end to the violence.

In 2011, Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with fellow Liberian Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman. Gbowee continues to work tirelessly for peace, reconciliation, and women's empowerment, both in Liberia and around the world.

Gbowee is a renowned speaker, author, and founder of the various organizations, including the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA). Alongside leading GPFA, she is the executive director of the Institute on Gender, Law, and Transformative Peace at the City University of New York School of Law.

She enjoys writing, cooking, caring for her eight children and community, and sitting under her favorite tree with her grand-dog, Ace.
