Allan Frater

Allan Frater is an author, teacher and psychotherapist. He lives in London with his wife and a three-legged dog called Milly.

He is interested in the role of imagination within normal everyday life, creative work and healing/transformation - an interest which he traces to a childhood of imaginary friends, magic dens and over-dosing on Enid Blyton and Worzel Gummidge.

In a way, his work is about finding a way back to that enchanted, story-filled life - not as a regressive or naive return, but as a renewal in mature adult life of an imaginative ability at the heart of human potential and creativity.

His first book 'Waking Dreams' presented a critical development of standard approaches to 'active imagination' and 'guided imagery', incorporating paradigm shifting ideas and methods from ecopsychology, complexity theory, fractal geometry and transpersonal psychotherapy.

Allan runs a popular on-line 'Waking Dreams' course based on his book.

His second book 'The Act of Imagination: Psychosynthesis Psychotherapy in Experiential Context' is currently 'in-press' and to be published by Transpersonal Press in spring 2026.
