Dan Butler

Dr. Dan Butler is the superintendent of the Western Dubuque County Community School District in Northeast Iowa. Previously, he was a principal in the district, focusing on fostering positive relationships, high-impact instructional techniques, and building leadership capacity. Before his administrative roles, Dan taught third and fifth grades and coached baseball and football.

Dan is also an adjunct professor in the Educational Leadership department at the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned his doctorate. His accolades include the 2021-2022 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, finalist for the School Administrators of Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year (2019, 2020), and the 2018 UNI Educational Leadership Legacy Award. For over six years, Dan co-moderated Iowa Educational Chat (#IAedchat).

He published Permission to Be Great and has contributed to Principal Magazine. Dan and his wife, Johna, live in Iowa with their sons, Mason and Nolan.
