Susan Schwartz

Dr. Susan Schwartz, Ed.D., is first and foremost a LITERACY/ARTS advocate.

She is a former teacher, principal, teacher educator at York University and at OISE/University of Toronto, and author/co-author of professional books for teachers. Her books include:

- "All Write, A Teacher's Guide to Writing"

- "Retelling, Relating, Reflecting, Beyond the 3 R's" with co-author Maxine Bone

- "Creating the Child-Centred Classroom," "Creating the Dynamic Classroom, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Edition," and "Creating the Dynamic Classroom, 5 Must-Haves for Teachers, 4th Edition" (2020, 2024) with co-author Mindy Pollishuke

In her retirement, Susan is an editor, self-publisher, and coach helping others bring their books to publication.

Susan has recently launched her first children's book, "Another Monkey? A heartwarming story for ages 3 to 8 about love, gift-giving and sharing." It is available in English as well as BILINGUAL editions in French-English and in Spanish-English.

Based on true events (and originally written almost 40 years ago) about her son, Michael, when he was 4 years old and his monkey puppet, readers will relate to this values-rich narrative if they have ever had or still have a stuffed animal, puppet, toy, or possession that is precious to them. Find out what happens when Michael realizes he has “too many monkeys!”

These monkeys are “sooo different!” and “just like us!” welcomes a discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Other themes include generosity, gratitude, family, friendship, sharing, and ownership. The story also reinforces manners, colours, numbers one to six, and stores in the community.

Repetition and description encourage young children and even the most reluctant readers to read. The bolded, italicized, and CAPITALIZED words along with the punctuation and grammar help to encourage fluency, expressive reading, and confidence.

In the "AFTERWORD,” the author shares the book's creation journey and her personal experiences/beliefs about collections, the authorship process, and the importance of research and exploring multiple perspectives.

UNIQUE to this cumulative story is the illustrations are created by the author’s SIX grandchildren, ages 6 to 16. They each signed their name at the bottom of the page where their monkey is introduced, which, along with the "AFTERWORD,” help to motivate all readers, children and adults alike, to become ARTISTS and ILLUSTRATORS, RESEARCHERS and AUTHORS!
