Margaret Brown, thanks to Radford University’s Department of English and the University’s Honors Program, created and taught a number of honors courses over the years that met the requirements for English 102, the Reading, Writing & Research course for freshmen. She taught 102H (AIDS) in the early 80s. Other courses she created and taught were 102H (Poverty).and 102H (Community Service). For four years she taught 102H (The Vietnam War). The last two years, Brown invited members of Vietnam Vets of America, Chapter 138 to meet weekly with her and her students to learn first-hand from Vietnam vets.
While teaching, Brown served six years as editor of The National Honors Report, a 56-page quarterly published by The National Collegiate Honors Council. She is a life-time honorary member of the NCHC, a former member of the Southern Regional Honors Council, the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council (Virginia and West Virginia), and the National Association of African-American Honors Programs. She is also a former member of the Military Writers Society of America. The MWSA named her book Best History Book of the Year in 2011.
Brown now lives with her husband, Earl, and their 18-pound cat, Rosie, in St. Augustine FL. Their daughter Emily also lives in St. Augustine. Brown and her family have visited the Wall and attended Rolling Thunder, the annual Memorial Day event drawing as many as 400,000 vets from nearly every state.
