Alex R. Knodell

Alex Knodell is Associate Professor of Classics and Director of Archaeology at Carleton College. His research focuses on themes of landscape, interaction, and long-term social change, especially among the pre- and protohistoric societies of the Mediterranean world.

In Greece, he co-directs the Small Cycladic Islands Project and the Mazi Archaeological Project, both regional archaeological surveys. He has also done archaeological fieldwork in Jordan, Guatemala, Portugal, and the United States.

He is author of Societies in Transition in Early Greece: An Archaeological History (University of California Press) and co-editor of Regional Approaches to Society and Complexity (Monographs in Mediterranean Archaeology, Equinox). He has also published articles in numerous books and journals, including Antiquity, American Journal of Archaeology, World Archaeology, Hesperia, the Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology, and the Cambridge World History.
