Phil Burton-Cartledge is Course Director and Programme Lead for Sociology at the University of Derby. His research interests are in social theory and political sociology with a focus on British politics. Published academic work has covered the class composition of the Labour Party, what Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the party meant in this context, and the strategic options available to Keir Starmer. He also has a long-standing interest in the far left and has published on its recent history. As a frequent blogger at All That Is Solid, he has built up a body of writing on the development and trajectory of the Conservative Party. His first book, Falling Down: The Conservative Party and the Decline of Tory Britain is the culmination of these efforts, and will be published in September 2021 from Verso. He has contributed articles to The Guardian, The Independent, Tribune, openDemocracy, and the New Statesman.
