Alta is a researcher, genealogy enthusiast, and former journalist. She delves deep into journals, old newspapers, and community histories to write stories about working-class people of the late 1800s. Each story may have heartbreak at its core, but hope is dauntless, and so are her characters. Her timeless themes speak of grit, determination, hope, grace, and love.

The author grew up in Morgan, Utah, which has a rich pioneer heritage, and now resides in Northwest Washington. Her novel The Shadow of Wildflowers won the NYC Big Book Award in Western Fiction, was a finalist in the Big Book Awards for Western Fiction, received the 2021 Literary Titan Gold Award, and is a nominee for the 2022 Whitney Award.
