I've been a climber and fell walker since my early teens. Since becoming a father with two children in the 1980s I began to plan walks to suit a young family. This resulted in my first publication, Family Walks in the White Peak. This spawned a nationwide series for Scarthin Books of Cromford, and I wrote a further five Family Walks guides. I retired from my teaching profession and became manager of Foothills – the Outdoor Specialists in Sheffield – where I became their walking guide leader hosting weekly, guided walks throughout the Peak District. The two Peak District Day Walks guidebooks, published by Vertebrate Publishing, are my latest project and are based on an intimate knowledge of the National Park. I still guide walks every week in the Peak.
