GIUSEPPE BARTOLI

Giuseppe Eric Bartoli Bertolero is a Peruvian-Italian-American poet, novelist, copywriter, translator, illustrated children’s book author, consultant, painter, and photographer currently residing between Lima and Ica, Peru. He was born 30 April 1983 in Charlottesville, Virginia; however, he quickly became accustomed to the notion of moving, as his father’s post-gradual studies meant relocating first to Columbus, Ohio, and then, to Miami, Florida.

The prospect of a better life meant Giuseppe was on the move again, as his family relocated to his mother’s native Peru. As a child growing up in Lima during the years of the Peruvian Internal Conflict, he found comfort in family, close friends, literature, and the after-school football program at Colegio Peruano Británico. Nonetheless, there are certain sights and sounds, even as an adult, his Confessionalist Poetry still tries to come to terms with.

After graduating from Sir James Henderson British School of Milan, Italy, Giuseppe opted to read International Communications and History at AUP [the American University of Paris]. While studying there, his first collection of collected writings Excerpts of Life was published in 2003 in Maryland, USA.

Determined to improve his writing, he transferred to the University of St Andrews the following year where he began working on his second collection of poems [his first in Spanish] Las Veinticinco (Horas), which was not to be published until 2009 [in Lima, Peru]. After struggling with an endless array of poetic forms and styles, his writing was to forever change the day he befriended the great Scottish poet Douglas Dunn. Inspired by his writing, kind advice, and tutelage, he was able to leave St Andrews with something far more valuable than just a diploma: it was discovering a poetic voice that suited both his English and Spanish personas.

After a brief stint of reading the first year of a triple masters in managements at the prestigious Grand Ècole EM Lyon in Lyon, France, and travelling around the Americas, Giuseppe decided to return to the UK, where he successfully completed an M.A. in Creative Writing at Kingston University under the tutelage of world-renowned poets such as Todd Swift, Vahni Capildeo, and Paul Perry, where he began to experiment with prosaic-verse and prose. As a result, the adaptability of his poetic voice has seen some of his poems appear in issues of Poetry Scotland, Poetry Quarterly, the online e-zine Your One Phone Call, and anthologies like Oxfam’s Lung Jazz.

Giuseppe also made another important discovery while studying at Kingston: we also wanted to teach. After applying to a few PhD and MFA programs around the world, he opted to remain at Kingston to read a Creative Writing PhD inspired by the work and life of the Uruguayan poet Delmira Agustini. Fascinated by the notion of literary tradition and gender-ventriloquism, after months of research and two trips to Montevideo, the exciting prospect of a collection of poems in the form of a dialogue between Delmira, and those around her, has begun to surface. However, due to personal problems he was forced to pause his doctoral studies.

After working as a consultant in real estate projects, in 2018 he read a joint finance diploma between the renowned La Universidad de Piura and London School of Economics. Since, he has been reinvented himself as Manager of Mining Operations, heavy machinery operator, and freelance copywriter [for companies in the US and the EU]. From the silences of the deserted Andes of Peru he has written six new titles looking for publication.

His past publications include: Excerpts of Life [Collected Writings], PublishAmerica, MD, USA, 2003; Las Veinticinco (Horas) [Poetry], Mesa Redonda, Lima, Peru, 2007; Los Usos Indebidos del Amor [Poetry], Editorial Apogeo, Lima, Peru, 2016; The Fifth Most Wanted Man [Poetry], Marick Press, Washington DC, USA, 2016; Sinchi [Novel], Eyewear Publishing, London, UK, 2017; Sinchi [Poetry], Kindle Edition, 2020; Los Usos Indebidos del Amor [Poetry], Kindle Edition, 2021.
