Dr. Stephen C. Baldwin

BRIEF BIO OF STEPHEN C. BALDWIN

Stephen C. Baldwin is a retired educator who enjoyed teaching in five states across the country. From 1968 to 1989, Baldwin earned three degrees: BA in History, MA in Deaf Education, and Ph.D. in Theatre History, Theory and Criticism.

Before he “retired” from teaching in 2008, he was a twice-elected president of the Texas Association for the Deaf, newsletter editor, writer, and photographer. He won the NAD’S Greenmun Leadership Award as well as the Literary Award. He is also proud of his Laurent Clerc Award (GUAA) for his social contributions in Deaf history, cable television (Silent Network), and documentaries (Davideo Productions) in 2015.

Baldwin’s first book, “Pictures in the Air: The Story of the National Theatre of the Deaf,” was published by Gallaudet University Press in 1994. The second edition of this NTD history book may be available in 2021. (Update: Dr. Baldwin withdrew his manuscript from GUP citing disagreements with GUP editorial decisions, and will publish his American Deaf Theate book in 2023.) His first novella “Backspace” was published by Savory Words Publishing in 2015. Since 1978, he has written over 100 articles covering various topics.

Since he wrote his first play 40 years ago, he finished 26 produced plays. Most of his plays related to Deaf history, Deaf culture and even a West Texas rodeo melodrama for a hearing community theater. As of this writing, his 27th play, an original story about a Deaf Hispanic female was stage read at the Santa Cruz Theater in Austin, Texas, on February 8, 2021, and may be produced sometime in 2022.

Dr. Baldwin was a long distance runner champion who holds the mile and two-mile marks and numerous short and long course cross country records at Gallaudet University (1967-1968). He was inducted in AAAD/USADSF and GU Athletic Halls of Fame. As of November 29, 2021, he is still a proud member of the National Association of the Deaf, especially on its Deaf Culture & History Section.

He currently lives in Austin with his wife Rosie Serna. Dr. Baldwin is also the president of his nonprofit organization, Deaf Television Foundation (DTF), which espouses theater, literary and long-distance endeavors. From 2019 to 2020, DTF produced and staged six events. DTF is proud to announce that Texas School for the Deaf with partner with DTF for a national Deaf Authors Book Festival from May 6 to 7, 2022 at TSD in Austin.
