Mark Davenport was born in Stockport in Cheshire and qualified in medicine in 1981 at the University of Leeds (MB ChB) with later surgical training at Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester before finally arriving in London. in 1989. He has a postgraduate research degree (ChM) awarded from the University of Leeds on experimental liver transplantation and organ preservation.
He was appointed as a consultant paediatic surgeon at Kings College Hospital in 1994. His main clinical interests are in hepatobiliary diseases such as biliary atresia and choledochal malformations. Since 2008 he has been honored with a Professorial Chair in Paediatric Surgery from King's College, University of London.
He has written over 350 peer-reviewed research papers and over 50 chapters. He actively promotes medical writing having edited five international multi-author books both on general paediatric surgery and more specialist surgical topics. He is also the UK editor of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery (Elsevier). He was elected the President of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS) for 2016-18.
