Joe Seals

JOE SEALS holds a degree in Environmental Horticulture.

He worked his way through retail and wholesale nurseries, as a manager and grower, as a landscape designer and contractor, then detoured through the corporate gardening book and magazine world, and eventually ended up in the international seed and plant industry where he spent many years as a director of product development, marketing, and sales.

For business, he traveled through gardens and commercial horticulture operations of Europe, Japan, Latin America, and North America searching for new plants and studying new practices and gardening philosophies, while sometimes speaking to horticultural trade organizations to share his findings.

Teaching — off and on — started 40 years ago, with stints at UCLA and adult programs at two other colleges, training of Master Gardeners in three states, and, most recently, offering up occasional fun classes within city parks & recreation programs for adults and children.

His current and long-standing horticultural consulting enterprise has included both professional and amateur clients in at least a dozen states, covering all four corners and the very middle of the country.

In addition to client designs he’s done in the varied geographical areas, he’s created his own gardens where he’s lived in California, Wisconsin, Illinois, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and where he lives now in the Pacific Northwest.

With several books edited and written, this is his third independent book.

Gardening, of course, has been a passion of his for over 60 years.
