Dr T K Harris MD

Dr TK Harris MB ChB D.OL (Oxford). Doctor, neuropsychiatrist, expert on mental health performance and Islamic psychology.

See if you agree with this: We would be better off if we knew how to be of greater influence in bringing contentment or success to our own lives. To that end, if you haven't come across me before, don't buy my books yet. My sincere hope is that I can be of some use to people, in whichever way works for them. My work is influenced by what people ask me to write about. In short, it's about how to deal with everyday issues in extraordinary ways.

Find my Youtube channel, see if what I say makes sense to you. See what great scholars like Mufti Menk say about me, and have a look at my blog and Instagram too. Get to know my work and decide if it is for you. Then buy the books because they are fully detailed, instructive, and scientifically and religiously evidenced. If it is in your fate to be helped by what I do, this will happen not a minute too soon, nor a minute too late.

After completing medical training in Oxford and Edinburgh, around 25 years ago, I first went on to specialist training in cardiac surgery. As wonderful as that work was, I couldn't help but start to think how strong the mind-body connection was. After all, nearly half of my patients had had heart attacks after receiving some terrible news or facing some kind of stress. How fascinating that such abstract things- information and stress- could cause such a dramatic physical consequence as to block the arteries of the heart. I turned to neuroscience and have been in the field ever since. I am a neuropsychiatrist. A doctor of the mind. I have treated thousands of patients in mental health, helping them find contentment and strength again.

Something seemed missing for me though, and for my patients. So many of them had deep spiritual questions, such as the purpose of life, or their relationship with the idea of a higher power, and how to be of good character and conduct as part of being strong, defined individuals.

Being a Muslim, I was fortunate to have had a childhood friend who was a very well known Islamic scholar with tens of millions of followers in social media. His name is Mufti Ismail Menk. Our fields crossed paths in many ways. He told me that most of the issues that people bring to him are related to health and wellbeing.

'Am I being punished?' 'Is my faith weak?' 'What does God want?' 'Is it bad to be successful?' ' How can I have better knowledge of my strengths?'

Mufti has a wonderful reputation for bringing his followers a sense of comfort, but he felt that there was not enough being said by professionals. Doctors of all faiths seem to recoil at combining their secular teachings with religious tradition, and people were getting lost in the gap between.

And so he asked me if I would be interested in writing for the benefit of these people. He didn't need to ask twice. Whilst it was true that people of faith have better mental health- and there are hard scientific studies to prove this- it was also true that many people didn't have a way to understand their minds in a simple, effective manner, nor to further strengthen their minds and develop their hearts.

It was time for science and medicine to meet Islam and find a way that served both traditions. So that's what I did. Mufti Menk has supported my mission to make mental health a straightforward issue. The man is a gem, more magical and kind in person than even his public persona. Be steady. Find your greatest strengths. Let me show you how, in a way that cuts through the often misleading nonsense that parades as 'self help'.

It might help you to know that you will be helping others too. Profits go towards my mission to make mental health access possible for as many people around the world as possible. Donate if you like- go to tinyurl.com/drtkharris. I am here to serve as many people as I can, and that will happen if and when the time is right, day by day. Inshallah.
