Douglas G. Pearce

Douglas Pearce is an emeritus professor of tourism management at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His teaching, research and consulting projects have taken him to Europe, Asia, South America and the Pacific. In addition to numerous academic papers, he has written five scholarly books on tourism research and the geography of tourism and co-edited four others. His books have been translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Japanese.

In retirement, Douglas has begun to write fiction which draws on his expertise and international experience. His debut novel, Lepan’s Shadow, is scheduled for publication in September 2025. Lepan’s Shadow is an international mystery dealing with the price of scholarly ambition and who pays that price. Cliff West, a retired professor from New Zealand, hauls the body of renowned French anthropologist and activist Antoine Lepan from a hot pool in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Cliff turns amateur sleuth and becomes obsessed with finding out how the Frenchman met his fate on their pre-conference tour.

Douglas lives in Wellington with his wife Chantal.
