Theophus H. Smith

Theophus "Thee" Smith, Ph.D. is an emeritus professor of religion at Emory University and an Episcopal priest at the Cathedral of St. Philip, in Atlanta, GA USA. His academic specialties include philosophy of religion, African American religious studies, liberation theology, violence studies and Afrofuturism. In 1994 he authored the award-winning book, Conjuring Culture: Biblical Formations of Black America, and co-edited Curing Violence, a collection of essays on 'sacred violence.’ A former director of the Atlanta chapter of the National Coalition Building Institute, he leads workshops with the restorative justice nonprofit, Southern Truth and Reconciliation—STAR, specializing in diversity training on race matters, conflict resolution and community building. His faith-based and interfaith expertise extends the legacy of the celebrated mystical theologian, Howard Thurman, via Thurman Reconciliation Initiatives—TRI Inc.
