Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1925, Albert J. Schmidt came of age between the two World Wars. He enlisted in the US Army Air Forces and served in New Guinea and the Philippines in 1945-46. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of London in 1952-53 and received his Ph.D. in early modern British history in 1953. He taught history at Coe College and the University of Bridgeport, where he was the Arnold Bernhard Professor of History and Professor of Law, chaired the History Department, and served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and vice president of Academic Affairs. Schmidt retooled himself on several occasions. In 1960-62, he studied Russian history and language at Indiana University and Moscow University. In 1974, he enrolled in Harvard Business School's program in educational management, and in 1981-82, he attended the New York University Law School. Schmidt retired from teaching in 1988 but continued to engage in historical research and scholarship for several more decades.
