Ed Surma

Born in the 50’s, grew up in the 60’s, came of age in the 70’s, Ed has lived in such diverse places as the steel towns of Western Pennsylvania, the deserts of Phoenix Arizona, the Hill Country of Texas, and the suburbs of Northern Virginia. By the time he graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University he had experienced the Kennedy assassination and the moon landing, witnessed the end of the Vietnam War and the resignation of Richard Nixon. Though his degree was in Creative Writing, his love of science and technology led him to pursue a minor in Data Processing (what they called IT back in 1977). After 40 years in the high-tech industry, in fields as far ranging as assembly-language programming, speech recognition, and the Internet, Ed decided to retire and pursue his life dream of writing fiction.

Ed resides in Northern Virginia with his partner Marita, just a couple dozen miles from the nation’s capital, surrounded by tall trees, hiking trails, and a plethora of great blue heron. Beside hiking at least twice a week, Ed makes frame and log drums, plays Tibetan bowls, and is always grabbing his camera when an interesting bird flies by. He studied shamanic practices through the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and is learning the magic and mysticism of his Celtic and Germanic ancestors. He is blessed with two beautiful daughters, a great son-in-law, and two tremendous grandsons.

Ed’s hair started turning gray when he was 20 years old.
