Mick Hill

Mick Hill’s obsession with F1 started at the age of 16 after cycling to Brands Hatch in the pouring rain to watch the 1974 Race of Champions. The next F1 race would be the British GP at Brands where he was fortunate enough to get his illustrations signed by the drivers such as James Hunt, Graham Hill and Niki Lauda. This passion for machines and how they work led him to a career in technical illustration where he produced illustrations for Ford workshop manuals and was commissioned by Marshall Cavendish to work on the weekly part works Car Fix It. He spent 3 years working in publishing producing illustrations for over 200 books. After a brief spell racing Superkarts he moved overseas working with motor companies such as Honda, Ford, Toyota and Mazda, as well as Camel who commissioned him to create illustrations of their F1 drivers Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher. During his career he has also worked with F1 teams such as McLaren, Lotus, Williams, Jordan and Midland F1, producing a wide variety of illustrations from cutaways to exploded views which have appeared in many motoring publications worldwide. He has produced a series of cutaways for the Ford Motor Company, as well as a ghosted view of the Ford Focus highlighting the components that were used to make the musical instruments for the Ford orchestra.

Speed record breaking machines are his other passion and he has produced cutaways of Thrust SSC, the fastest car on earth and the rocket bike, Mach 3 Challenger. His most recent cutaway was Donald Campbell’s Bluebird K7. In 2014 his artwork was used for a wine label in Australia to commemorate Campbell’s world land and water speed records of 1964. Mick now lives in North Yorkshire where he continues to pursue his love of illustrating F1 cars.
