Christopher Gerrard

Christopher Gerrard is Professor of Medieval Archaeology at Durham University. His twelve books include Interpreting the English Village: Landscape and Community at Shapwick (2013 with Mick Aston), and Lost Lives, New Voices (2018 with Durham colleagues), both winners of the Best Archaeological Book of the Year award. His most recent edited book - Waiting for the End of the World? (2020) - is about natural disasters in the Middle Ages, among them earthquakes and disease. He has excavated in Spain, the Azores and the UK, and most recently at Auckland Castle, a palace of the Bishops of Durham.

Chris has appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? (US - Jon Cryer), Digging Up Britain's Past (Channel 5 - Game of Thrones), Dan Snow's History Hit podcast and co-designed a free online FutureLearn course about the archaeology and history of 17th century Scottish soldiers found near Durham Cathedral in 2013.
