DAVID LACEY

David Lacey, Photographer, Artist and Author. David professes to be a big child at heart, with a boisterous sense of humour and an overactive imagination. Inevitably, this has led him to become author of ‘Voll The Tiny Giant’.

Born in Amesbury Wiltshire, David remembers the days when he could walk right in to Stonehenge for an afternoon picnic. Of course those days have long gone and you cannot even get close to the stones anymore, let alone play on them. David now lives in Somerset with his lovely family, which includes Rocky a very mischievous Cairn Terrier.

David likes to cook; loves the resilience of Renault cars and despite having an annoying monotone voice, often bursts into song without warning prompting comments from his family like “stop that awful racket”.

David, who is an avid film fan and has a keen interest in anthropology, science and astronomy, is currently working on a follow-up adventure story titled Voll & The Dragon Monster.

Where did the idea for Voll The Tiny Giant come from?

In David’s own words:

“I’ve always had the kind of imagination that could on occasions, turn into a vivid daydream - often a funny daydream. Rather than trying to suppress this, I thought perhaps I should put it to good use. Being a big child at heart, I quickly realised that the answer was to try and mould my thoughts into something constructive. Hence came the idea to write children’s stories”.

Voll the Tiny Giant was created whilst sat in a Somerset coffee shop!

Using a collection of mini notepads over a period of many months, my writing often got muddled and illegible, until such time as I managed to decipher the scrawl into readable text before finally transferring it to my PC.

I understand it is quite unusual to come up with a book title before you have even written the book, but in my case, this was indeed the case. The title for my book came at the very outset of my writing and it quickly set the pace as the story developed. The concept of this tiny giant trying to get by in a fantasy land where all the other giants are big, struck an emotional cord.

Throughout the world today in every corner of civilisation, there are striking examples of the underdog trying to survive in what often seems like a grossly unfair and difficult existence.

After taking shape in a Somerset coffee shop, Voll The Tiny Giant has now concluded with the long-awaited publication. For those who are still toying with the idea of becoming an author, I can only say – go for it!

Although the publication journey can be long and extremely frustrating at times, one thing you can be assured of; the publication process is far easier today than it ever has been in the past.
