About the Author Dianne Magor
One day I was sitting at the beach on a blustery, windy day and waves were crashing on the shore, an inducement for creativity. I began writing my book that day and did not stop for over five years until it was completed. I always knew the story would be told; however I didn't know when. And my novel would end up inspiring me to pursue my future vocation.
A Serendipity Calls is a nonfiction love story. I was 22 when I met Bob, 24 and we were crazy in love. He became my world. Things seemed perfect until one day he revealed that he had terminal cancer and could not guarantee me a future. Then there were three of us... the two of us and the specter of cancer looming in the background.
Our unconditional love inspired us to try and conquer our fears and overcome a mammoth challenge ahead of us. We wanted to fight for our dreams, learn resilience, and conquer our fears .We questioned why this was happening, would our love see us through, and how much time would we have together? The harder we tried to remain strong and determined, during our darkest moments, the more it miraculously triggered the arrival of serendipities...unexpected gifts that appeared at the right time, renewing hope, and increasing our determination to never give up.
This experience inspired me for the rest of my life. I finally knew where I belonged and decided to go to university and pursue a training in the helping profession. I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees along with several certifications enabling me to teach, council and rehabilitate people with a variety of challenges including: mental health, cognitive deficits, addictions, developmental disabilities, rehabilitation and music therapy. I spent 35 years serving many Vancouver Island communities assisting individuals to achieve their goals according to their capabilities; and my goal was to help them be the best they could be... whatever that was.
I am grateful too for the years I spent with Bob, and the love ,self-awareness, spiritual growth and understanding that led me where I needed to be.
My passions are writing, music, art, theatre, and the great outdoors; and I am proud of my two daughters who inspire me with their love, humour, insights and wisdom. I also have a terrific family, good friends and three amazing cats.
I also realize there is a correlation between my story about our personal experience long ago, and our present world dilemma with COVID 19, which put millions of people in jeopardy. Many grieve for sick or lost loved ones, financial insecurities and fear of what lies ahead. Despite this huge challenge, I also notice that millions of front line workers nurses, doctors, first responders, educators, musicians, artists, scientists and many others have become our 'serendipities'...our miracles who help us through trauma and uncertainty; and the world will come together. Benevolence and kindness will reappear at the right moments and renew our faith, optimism, gratefulness and get us through. And we will embrace the new normal and build a stronger and even better world together.
