Ian Austin

IF EVER A DETECTIVE WAS CONCEIVED WHOSE CHARACTER WAS FORGED IN THE FIRES OF AUTHENTICITY, THEN DAN CALDER IS THAT DETECTIVE.

Ian Austin brings unparalleled authenticity to his writing, drawing from an extraordinary life and career that shaped his fictional detective, Dan Calder.

Born in 1963 in Southampton, England, Ian left school at 16 with no qualifications and navigated various jobs, including hotel porter and photocopier salesman, before finding his calling in the Hampshire Police. His career spanned roles as a constable, detective, tactical firearms officer, covert surveillance operative, and National Crime Squad trainer. Ian's journey is filled with incredible stories, from surviving a near-fatal attack on Christmas Eve 1990 to confronting IRA terrorists at Stonehenge, and even encountering surreal moments like discussing the Falklands War with a Lord of the Admiralty while in full combat gear.

In 2003, Ian moved to New Zealand, captivated by its beauty and lifestyle. He now resides in Tuakau, south of Auckland. Ian collaborates with top professionals, including renowned editors Stephen Stratford and Richard Arcus, ensuring the highest quality in his work.

The Dan Calder series debuted in 2016 with The Agency, earning critical acclaim and spots on the Neilsen Best Sellers List. It was followed by The Second Grave in 2018 and Frozen Summer in 2019, completing the initial trilogy. In 2021, Ian released Bonded, a gripping new instalment in the series, inspired by the legendary Plate 77 Penny Red postage stamps. The story weaves historical intrigue with thrilling crime-solving, showcasing Dan Calder at his finest.

In 2024, Ian launched Man. Made. expanding his literary repertoire and delivering a fresh perspective to his readers. Man. Made. comes with its own soundtrack of hit songs and classical masterpieces.

Ian Austin’s vivid imagination and authentic storytelling continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Keen to always keep moving forward in his literary career, 2025 is going to be a huge year for Ian and his readers. There is a new story but it’s not Dan Calder!

THE END will be Ian's sixth book. It’s set in America and involves a number of States Legislatures, the F.B.I. and a South American criminal cartel. For Ian the biggest move away from his previous books is within the very style of writing, which he found to be immensely satisfying.

And now it's here. THE END is available as a paperback or Ebook. "THE END is everything I wanted it to be when I first had the idea. I do believe my loyal readers will enjoy it for the same reasons they did the previous Calder books. And for lovers of American crime fiction with the F.B.I. front and centre, I hope you'll consider it for your to be read list."
